Our first item of news is to announce that Michael Kaltwang has accepted the director’s position for the Chesterfield County Library System. He will be joining our staff on Aug. 10. Michael resides in Ruby with his family and he comes to us from Northeastern Technical College, where he was an associate dean and an instructor of arts and computer technology. Welcome, Michael!

The Chesterfield County Library System has been a hub of activity this summer. During the month of June, more than 7,177 patrons visited the five branches of the library. They checked out 5,077 adult and children’s books, 473 DVDs and 398 periodicals. In addition, 3,441 patrons accessed the computers.

The Summer Reading Program for youths and adults has kept many of our patrons entertained and busy. With all of the activities based on the theme “Every Hero Has a Story,” Mrs. Harvey, the youth services coordinator and our branch managers have been able to assist patrons to escape the ordinary by exploring and celebrating a variety of heroes and hero types.

The Mini Comic Con for the Summer Reading Wrap-Up is scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Cheraw Rec Center. It is open to all ages, in addition we are having a Cosplay (Google it!) contest with prizes. Story time at 11 a.m. will resume the week of Aug. 17 through the week of Aug. 24.

At Chesterfield Library on Thursday, Aug. 6 at 7 p.m., we will have our own hometown native, Jonathan Douglas in concert. Jonathan is a multi- talented musician who plays the guitar, banjo, bass, piano, mandolin and violin. He will perform a selection of classical guitar music and perhaps a song or two featuring the fiddle. There is no charge to attend this concert. Seating is limited, so call 843-623-7489 now to reserve your seat.

The following are new books at the branches: “Go Set a Watchman” by Harper Lee, “Wishes for Christmas” by Fern Michaels, “Badlands” by C.J. Box and “Baby, You’re the Best” by Mary B. Morrison, plus many others.

One final note, Chesterfield County Schools start back on Aug. 17. Now is the time to get your children a library card if they don’t already have one.
