Cheraw police have arrested four men in connection with a Nov. 15 drive-by shooting on Foundry Hill Road.
Officers received a shots-fired call at 7:55 p.m. and were on their way to the scene when they noticed a car matching the suspect vehicle description turning onto Green Street and eventually turning onto Powe Street, police said.
Cheraw officers stopped the car in the Sav-Way Convenience Store parking lot. The four men inside the vehicle were detained in separate patrol cars.
Police said they found live rounds in the back seat along with spent casings and two handguns under the front passenger seat.
The suspects are 27-year-olds Tykee McKellar and Tyree McKellar, both of 4511 Millwood Drive, Dillon, 31-year-old Travis Esaw of 105 Bermuda Drive, Cheraw, and Christopher Michael Matthews, 43, of 3321 S.C. 38, Bennettsville.
Each man was charged with first-degree assault and battery and possession of a stolen pistol. Esaw faces an additional charge of possession of a firearm by a felon.
Charges indicate the intended target or targets were not injured in the spray of gunfire, which police have described as gang-related. The suspects likely would have been charged with attempted murder or assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature if a person had been shot.
First-degree assault and battery occurs when an act “is accomplished by means likely to produce death or great bodily injury,” according to the South Carolina Code of Laws.
Tykee McKellar was jailed under a $50,000 secured bond. Bail amounts for the other three suspects were not immediately available.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
