Five high school students recently received monetary awards from the Dizzy Gillespie Scholarship Fund Inc. during academic awards programs held in May.

The recipients are Savannah L. Ange, Tajee A. Turner and Averyona N. Gainey of Cheraw High School. McBee High School winners were Victoria A. Hicks and Ryne M. Mangum.

Students were selected for the awards based on their academic performance as well as community and church involvement and their future plans. Each student was presented a $500 award along with a certificate of scholarship for outstanding performance.

Clarence Long, founder and secretary/treasurer of the scholarship fund, and with President John Raiford said the money was raised during the annual Dizzy Gillespie Golf Tournament in October and from local sponsors.

“This is our way to give back to the community and support our youth to obtain higher education,” Long and Raiford said in a statement. “Special thanks to all our supporters.”

The next Dizzy Gillespie Scholarship Fund golf tournament is planned for Oct. 17 at Cheraw State Park.

For more information, contact Clarence W. Long at 478-737-3031. Monetary donations can be mailed to the scholarship fund at P.O. Box 411, Kathleen, GA 31047.
