Young heroes, heroines, masked marauders and caped crusaders converged on the Cheraw Community Center last Friday for the Chesterfield County Library System’s SummerCon.

Hospice of Chesterfield County sponsored the libraries’ summer reading wrap-up party held from noon to 3 p.m. and featuring costumes, comic books, crafts and creative games.

Participants brought home free comic book buttons and Timothy Rogers from Desert Dune Comics and Games in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina was on hand to sell comics at the event.

Children, teens and adults were all able to pick out comic book art to create the wearable buttons. Attendees also donned props including masks and capes for superhero selfies.

Costumed winners in age groups 5-12 and 13-18 were crowned in the event’s cosplay contest and received a Kindle Fire e-reader for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third. Prizes were provided by the Friends of the Chesterfield County Library System.

Youth services manager Charity Harvey hailed the SummerCon as a smashing success and thanked Hospice for providing free snacks and the libraries’ Friends group for donating the cosplay prizes.

Michael Kaltwang, who was hired last month as director of the library system, was on hand for the event to meet young readers and their parents.
