BENNETTSVILLE — Sheriff’s deputies say five people were shot early Sunday at the State Line Club in rural Marlboro County.

The victims, who are all North Carolina residents, were treated at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham and Sandhills Regional Medical Center in Hamlet and released several hours later, sheriff’s Lt. Jamie Seales said Monday.

Detectives have developed a person of interest in the case despite witnesses’ reluctance to speak about the shooting.

“The investigators interviewed several witnesses at the scene, hospitals and other locations in North Carolina,” Seales said in a statement. “Most of the witnesses were uncooperative with investigators and upon arrival at the club, investigators found water and bleach in the club and workers cleaning it prior to law enforcement arriving.”

Seales said initial reports of stabbings at the club were incorrect. Some club patrons sustained cuts from broken glass while running from the gunshots, he explained.

Deputies have not named victims of the shooting or identified those who were cut while leaving the nightclub. All injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

The State Line Club sits just a few hundred feet from the Richmond County, North Carolina line in Marlboro County. Seales said deputies have not had any previous enforcement issues at the nightclub but are now looking into possible alcohol law violations with assistance from the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division.

“The investigation also revealed numerous possible violations that SLED will be assisting with today that concern ABC laws and illegal activity that routinely may occur in the State Line Club,” Seales said Monday.

The shooting investigation is still ongoing, with detectives working to conduct interviews with club management and patrons.

Seales said deputies will meet with 4th Circuit Solicitor Will Rogers after concluding the probe to determine charges in the case.

Anyone with information on the shootings can call the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Office at 843-479-5605.
