PAGELAND — A wanted North Carolina sex offender was stunned with a Taser during a foot chase behind a Chesterfield County home last week.
Sheriff’s deputies received a tip from a bonding agent that 35-year-old Dustin Vaughn Parrish was hiding in a mobile home on Mangum School Road near Pageland the afternoon of Aug. 9, Sgt. Jimmy Coombes wrote in an arrest report.
Deputies obtained the owner’s permission to search the home and found Parrish inside. When Coombes called his name, Parrish turned to look at the sergeant and ran out the back door, the report states.
Coombes chased Parrish toward a cornfield and deployed his Taser to prevent the suspect from escaping. Parrish was struck in his side and hip area with the Taser barbs, Coombes wrote.
The bonding agent told deputies that Parrish has a bloodborne disease, according to the arrest report. Coombes said Parrish’s blood dripped onto his arm and said blood was transferred to his clothing during Parrish’s arrest.
Deputies used communicable disease precautions during and after the arrest and Coombes’ uniform and the Taser probes were secured in biohazard bags for cleaning, according to the report.
Parrish was wanted on a charge of failure to register as a sex offender in Union County, North Carolina. His last-known address on Potter Road in Waxhaw was verified most recently on Jan. 5 of this year, according to the N.C. Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry.
Parrish was convicted in May 2002 of taking indecent liberties with a minor in Union County. He was 20 years old and the victim was 15 when the offense occurred in July 2000.
The conviction carried 2 years, 6 months of probation and a minimum sex offender registration period of 10 years.
Parrish was convicted of obstructing justice and two counts of Level 1 driving while impaired in June 2014, according to the N.C. Division of Adult Correction. He received two years of supervised probation on those charges.
His criminal record includes past convictions of Level 3 DWI, forgery and uttering, larceny and assault with a deadly weapon.
Parrish was booked into the Chesterfield County Detention Center pending extradition on the North Carolina charge.
