LAURINBURG, N.C. — No charges have filed in a crash that killed a South Carolina man last week, Laurinburg police said on Monday.

The initial accident report said that Billy Barfield of Latta, South Carolina was killed while heading east on U.S. 74 in his 2000 Geo Tracker. His vehicle was hit from behind by a Ford box truck driven by Johnny Chambers of Charlotte, according to police.

Police say Chambers was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg after the wreck. A hospital spokesman said there was no patient listed under Chambers’ name Monday afternoon.

Cliff Sessoms, Laurinburg assistant police chief, said investigators are working on traffic crash reconstruction before preparing a final report.

“There have been no charges filed yet, it’s part of the process of determining what occurred in the accident,” Sessoms said. “We want to make sure everything is done properly.”

The report is expected to take a few weeks to complete, Sessoms said.

“This case involves the death of somebody, so we want to make sure we’re being as careful as we can,” Sessoms said.
