Authorities said that Jamal Gainey, 25, was in the driver’s seat of his car waiting on a friend to run in Jay’s Tobacco store on the corner of Front and Second streets in Cheraw Sunday night when he was shot at point blank range.

Not more than an hour later, he was pronounced dead by Chesterfield County Coroner Kip Kiser.

The shooting took place a block and a half from the Cheraw Police Department, yet officers were not aware of the incident until they received notification of a gun shot victim by Chesterfield General Hospital officials around 11 that same night.

“He died of a gun shot wound,” said Kiser.

“There were actually three people riding with Gainey,” said Cheraw Police Chief Jay Brooks.

According to their account of what happened, said Brooks, “Gainey was parked outside the store while one of the guys went in. And just as the friend was coming back to the car, someone snatched the driver’s door open, fired one shot and ran.”

“Gainey was shot in the upper body,” said Brooks.

Brooks said Gainey tried to drive himself to the hospital, but lost consciousness along Church Street. The friends in the car with him were able to take over the wheel and get him to Chesterfield General Hospital where emergency medical personnel attempted to save his life.

Gainey was a 2006 graduate of Cheraw High School.

Brooks said the investigation, which is being assisted by the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office, is “ongoing.”

Kiser said Gainey’s body was scheduled for autopsy Tuesday morning by Newberry Pathology.
