Grave site mapping project
By Karen Kissiah
Betty Barett finds a broken grave marker in the Chesterfield Public Cemetery that will be documented as part of a county-wide grave site mapping project for the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. The tombstone chasers led by Chesterfield County Historical Society President Margaret C. Dotson were dispersed to comb their respective areas for all cemeteries and burial grounds. The Chesterfield group started their search with the biggest graveyard in the town, on June 22. The earliest death date in Chesterfield’s municipal graveyard is April 20, 1836. This was published June 29, 2000.
