To the editor:
I have just returned from attending the beautiful annual memorial service given by Hospice of Chesterfield County in remembrance of all their patients who died during the past year. My husband, John M. “Shang” Poole, was one of these patients.
He and I had been under the care of Hospice for three years at the time of his death on May 25, after an eight-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Although our family was doing all they could to see that our needs were met, the time came when we required even more assistance, and Hospice was there.
They not only gave much-needed medical, emotional and spiritual support, but also gave lots of encouragement by helping me as a caregiver to feel more comfortable with Shang’s everyday care. By God’s grace and the wonderful dedication of the Hospice staff, Shang was granted his wish to remain at home throughout his illness.
I am so thankful that God blessed us by sending Hospice of Chesterfield County to walk with us through a very long and heartbreaking journey.
