To the editor:

Preparing a field of opportunities is a priority of any lawmaker. Rep. Herbert Fielding made it his focus to be a harbinger of progress for all people. He served in places where blacks had a wraith-like presence similar to a new moon.

Rep. Fielding served in World War II with my grandfather (a retired Army vet). He worked for the people in the House and Senate. He owned one of the larger funeral homes in the state. Most of all, he helped inspire. He helped uplift. In particular, his service wasn’t lengthy in the military or legislature. However, he left a lasting, moving story that anyone can learn from.

In the present times of frequent absentmindedness from our leaders, wherever we are, he was always there. Always attentive. And most importantly, ready to respond to the concerns of the people at all times. South Carolina will always have a dear place in our history for souls like him.
