All five of the incumbents in this year’s election to Chesterfield County Council managed to keep their seats, and several of them won by fairly big margins.
Eddie Rivers, whose seat was unopposed in Pageland’s District 1, received 1,004 votes. Voter turnout in that district was so strong, long lines caused voters to wait quite a while. In fact, Pageland was the last precinct to report results in Chesterfield County, as people, who had arrived before 7 p.m., were given the opportunity to vote. “They were still voting at 8:15 p.m.,” said Rivers.
Two of the winning candidates, Eddie Rivers, in District 1, and Matt Rivers in District 7, were on hand at the Chesterfield County Voter’s Registration office Tuesday evening, waiting for results. Both men agreed, even though they won, they’re glad election season is finally over. “Now we can move on with business,” said Matt Rivers.
Rivers, the current chairman of the Chesterfield County Council and Democratic candidate for District 7, received 1,450 votes in that district. Donna Johnson, the opposing Republican candidate, received 640 votes. Rivers won with 69.31 percent of the vote.
The three-way race to represent District 9 put incumbent Robert Cole in the winner’s circle again. “I appreciate all the people who helped with this election. Good grace was with us,” said Cole, who received 60.49 percent of the vote in that district. Theodore Burns received 24.36 percent of the vote in that district, and Catherine Thompson received 14.63 percent.
Lenora Powe received 1,291 votes to gain her re-election to District 6 on the Democratic ticket, which amounts to 65.10 percent of the vote in that district. Her opposition, Petition Candidate Tommy Hunt, received 687 votes. “I’m happy to be able to serve again,” said Powe, “and appreciate all the support. I’m looking forward, now, to working on goals I set forth in my campaign.”
Frank Plyler, in District 5, received 54.37 percent of the vote running on the Democratic ticket, with 927 votes. Johnny McKenzie, the petition candidate in that race, received 45.51 percent, with 776 votes. “This was a tough campaign,” Plyler said, “I want to thank all of the people who came out and voted for me. I really appreciate it.”
