The Cheraw Police Department is “going to great lengths to aggressively enforce the speed limit” at Huckleberry Park, said Cheraw Police Chief Jay Brooks, since the detour of the bridge at State Road has routed local traffic through this quiet neighborhood.

“We had a lot of complaints almost immediately,” Brooks said. “People were not use to that kind of traffic, nor is the area conducive to such.”

The department’s efforts have included the strategic placement of the radar machine, which allows motorists to see their speed as they begin to descend the long, sloping hill. Police have placed several additional speed limit signs in the area, in addition to the “Children at Play” sign that has always been at the top of the hill. And they are watching to see that motorists come to a complete stop when they reach Poplar Street.

“What I suggest,” said Brooks, “is that people find an alternate route because it’s probably going to be a year or more before they can get that bridge fixed.”
