Participants in the annual Daddy/Daughter Date Night last Friday would agree, as the words were echoed over the music, again and again, the best part of the evening is spending time together. But to see it in action, the evening appears to be, at least for the young ladies, all about the dresses, the shoes, the complimentary sunglasses, dancing (with or without Dad) and loud music. For the dads, much of the evening was spent focusing the camera, or video recorder, on their princess.
The Cheraw Parks, Recreation and Leisure Services Department has been sponsoring the event since 1998, and some families have taken part every year, said Lisa O’Neal, assistant director for the recreation department. The event has continued to grow in size and popularity. “This year we sold 250 tickets,” she said.
Gerald Butler has been escorting his daughter, Maquitta, to the event since she was 4 years old. She’s now a freshman at Cheraw High School. “Each year is different,” Butler said. “She’s gone from tiaras to evening gowns.”
Music was provided by DJ K. Smooth and was complete with disco lights. The evening included a meal and door prizes. The opportunity for daddy and daughter to be professionally photographed by Reid McBride also was available during the event.
If you have any doubts about how much fun these young ladies were having with their dads, their siblings and friends; perhaps the big grin on young Akeelah Douglas’ face can sum it up for you.
