Just in time for summer, The Cheraw Arts Commission is featuring shag dance lessons.

Beginning on Monday, June 1 dance lessons in South Carolina’s state dance will be taught for six weeks. Both beginner and intermediate classes will be offered for singles and couples.

Instructors for the classes will be Sam and Lisa West. Sam West is a six-time champion of the Carolina Shag Division at the U.S.A. Grand National Dance Championships and a three-time U.S. Open shag champion.

Lisa West is a U.S. Open cabaret champion and a two-time winner of the American Swing Dance Championship in the showcase division. Together, the Wests have been teaching and promoting shag dance throughout the country and have even held workshops in France, Spain, England, the Netherlands and aboard cruise ships.

Beginner classes will be held in the Teen Center at the Cheraw Community Center, 200 Powe St., on Monday evenings from 6:30-7:30 p.m. followed by intermediate classes. Cost for the classes are $140 per couple and $75 for a single participant. Each participant will receive an instructional DVD by Sam and Lisa West.

Advance registration is required. Call the Cheraw Arts Commission at 843-537-8420, extension 12, to register and for additional information. The Cheraw Arts Commission is supported by the S.C. Arts Commission, which receives funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
