PATRICK — Deputies charged a father and son team in a botched home invasion allegedly targeting an old man’s prescription pills.

Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office charged James Lee Register, 46, of 1005 Cat Pond Road, Patrick, and Dustin Beard Register, 17, of 1800 Spring Valley Road, Hartsville, with assault and battery stemming from an April 26 attack of an elderly Patrick man.

Dustin Register went to the door of a 70-year-old resident on J.C. Barefoot Road looking to use the phone for a ride home claiming to have had a falling out with his father.

While there, Dustin Register reportedly came into elderly man’s home uninvited with father James Register striking the resident in the head leaving an inch-long gash.

Father and son reportedly fled the scene hanging around nearby; the resident told both men the law was on the way and they headed towards the woods where a sheriff’s office dog team apprehended them.

While on the way to Chesterfield County Detention Center, Dustin Register reportedly told deputies he didn’t know his father was going to hit the old man, all he wanted was his pills.
