Filing for mayor and Cheraw Town Council seats was held last week, with only one person filing for each position. Of the four candidates, one was not an incumbent.

Candidates were Cheraw Mayor Andy Ingram, council member Dick Young and council member Ervin Funderburk. John K. Melton, the only candidate to file who has not previously been elected into office, hopes to fill the seat left vacant by former council member Ruth Spencer.

Cheraw Town Administrator Bill Taylor said because only one person would be running for each seat, he is going to ask the South Carolina Election Commission to grant those candidates an automatic victory so an election will not have to be held. Forgoing the election will save the town several hundred dollars in poll worker wages and printing costs for ballots.
