John Thornton "Snookie" Crawford, 71, of Hartsville, died Friday, March 5, 2004.

A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 8, 2004 from First Baptist Church with the Rev. Larry Painter officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Darlington County Humane Society, Box 1655, Hartsville S.C. 29551; or the Shaggers Hall of Fame Foundation, c/o Eddie Monsour, 2738 Colgate Drive, Fayetteville, N.C. 28304.

Born in Greensboro, N.C., Mr. Crawford was a son of the late William Henry and Mearl Thornton Crawford. He graduated from Carlisle Military School in 1950, served in the United States Air Force 1950-1954, and attended Clemson University and the University of South Carolina. He officiated high school football for 11 years, coached in the Pop Warner Football League in Charlotte, was associated with Creative Advertising for 34 years, and was a member of West Hartsville Baptist Church. He was a member of the Shaggers Hall of Fame and The Living Legends of North Myrtle Beach. Along with Jim Cox, Mr. Crawford organized the Darlington County Ducks Unlimited Chapter.

Surviving are his wife, Deborah Crawford of Hartsville; two sons, Bill (Dawn) Crawford of Hartsville, and John T. Crawford of Cheraw; two daughters, Jeannie (Mitchell) Gainey of Hartsville, and Julia Crawford of Hartsville; and four grandchildren, Mary Gainey, Lee Gainey, Morgan Crawford and William Crawford.

Arrangements were entrusted to Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home.
