The Cheraw State Park is where the 8th annual Cheraw Sprint Triathlon will take place April 29. The Cheraw Sprint is the second event in part of the Palmetto State Triathlon Series.
The race consists of a one-half mile swim in Lake Juniper, followed by a 15 mile bike course that takes the participants from the State Park, through Teals Mill and back, and ends with a 5k run completely in the State Park.
Participation varies from the World Class Athlete looking to warm up for the season, to the local weekender looking to test themselves against the clock. This year the Cheraw Sprint expects over 200 participants, which would make it the biggest race so far. Participants from all over North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Virginia have participated in the past, and the event has drawn participants from as far away as Canada and The Virgin Islands.
“This is a community event and everyone is welcome to participate, volunteer or just come out and watch,” race organizer Pat Drinnen said. Drinnen has organized and been a participant in this event every year from the beginning. If you are interested in volunteering, call (843) 537-0597.
The race is supported by The Bodyrockers, a local running and cycling club that participates in races and benefit rides all over the state during various times of the year.
A spaghetti dinner will be served for participants at Cheraw First Baptist Church from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 28. Chesterfield General Hospital, the primary sponsor of the event, along with many other businesses throughout the community help make this race a success year after year.
Participants may register online: go to www.set-upinc.com and click on Palmetto State Triathlon Series. Cost for entrance ranges from $64 for individuals to $110 for relay teams. The cost varies based on when and how you register. Significant discounts are given for registering online before the day of the event.
All proceeds from the event are used for scholarships for high school track and cross country athletes. To date, the Sprint Triathlon has awarded over $5,000 in scholarships.
