First-game jitters made a late appearance in Chesterfield's opening game, but a refocused second half effort and strong fourth quarter defense helped lead the Lady Rams to a 52-39 victory over Central of Pageland in their opening game of the season.
Shelia Shaw paced the Lady Rams with 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Kelley King added 13 points off the bench in the winning effort.
Chesterfield exploded to a quick 9-1 lead early in the first quarter, but saw it dissipate quickly as Central's frenzied defense broke the Lady Rams down.
Paced by Latifah Coleman (19 points) and Jantzen Plyer
(11 points), the Lady Eagles' offense responded and helped Central build a 23-17 halftime lead.
Central's lead reached 20-9 before Chesterfield's seniors began to chisel the lead back to a controllable amount.
The visiting Eagles surged again in the third quarter, as their lead reached as large as 32-21 before Chesterfield's defense intensified. Led by Whitley Sowell and Whitney Rivers, the Lady Rams switched to a man-to-man defense and began forcing Central into missed field goals.
