Chesterfield Town Council has passed the first of two readings for an ordinance that will reorganize several agencies in town, such as the Chesterfield Arts Commission and other event committees. On July 12, council voted unanimously to form what is being called Team Chesterfield.
Team Chesterfield is an effort to pool resources and establish a more focused role for the Chamber of Commerce, said Chesterfield Town Administrator David Huntley. Town officials are hoping local efforts to offer festivals and other community events will fair better if the various agencies can work together under one financial umbrella.
By divvying up the responsibilities, and offering more people an opportunity to participate, said Huntley, the Chamber office will be able to “focus more on attracting new business and the retention of business, rather than on organizing parades or other events.”
According to Section 1, of the new ordinance, “Team Chesterfield shall have the authority to oversee activities and funding of subcommittees as established by Council including, but not limited to, the areas of the Chamber of Commerce, the Arts, Economic Development, and Events.”
The fiscal responsibilities of Team Chesterfield will be handled by the mayor and council, or their written authority. According to the new policy, “Team Chesterfield may solicit and receive donations, operate concessions, and accept and receive funds from government and private sources. The treasurer and one additional officer must sign all checks.”
Another ordinance, passed recently, no longer allows citizens in the town of Chesterfield to have more than six chickens, and no roosters. A request for a variance, or the be grandfathered in, was heard before council last Thursday without response.
Ernest Pusser of the Ivy Hill neighborhood in Chesterfield asked council to consider his request. “I’ve become quite fond of some my chickens. I’ve had them a long time,” said Pusser.
No motion was made to consider his request. Pusser was reminded that the chicken ordinance will take effect Aug. 1.
