Some are whimsical, some are lamps, and some look like odd little creatures from a Salvador Dali painting. But, all of Jim Gleason’s sculpture work is made from various discarded or old musical instruments.
While working in the musical instrument repair business, Gleason began to collect various broken pieces of instruments, especially horn instruments. Over the years, he began putting them to work visually, rather than musically. And now, some of his latest works have been inspired by Cheraw’s own legendary musician, Dizzy Gillespie.
Gleason, a native of Florence, will have a solo exhibition of his work at the Mary G. Burr Art Gallery at the Cheraw Community Center Oct. 2 through Oct. 30, in conjunction with the South Carolina Jazz Festival honoring Gillespie’s contributions to the world of jazz and be-bop.
The public is invited to Meet the Artist, an event sponsored by the Cheraw Arts Commission, Oct. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m., in the gallery. The Cheraw Arts Commission is sponsored in part by the South Carolina Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.
