Robert “Bob” Murray Newsom III, 65, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2012.

Graveside services will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Ruby Cemetery with Military Honors.

Newsom was born June 9, 1947, in Monroe, N.C., a son of the late Bert Streater Newsom and Faye Coley Newsom, and was the grandson of the late Dr. R. M. Newsom Sr. and Grace Hurst Newsom. He attended Chesterfield Schools, and was a graduate of Camden Military Academy. He also attended Gordon Military College. Newsom was a Sergeant with the U.S. Army, and was an Army Ranger. He served during the Vietnam War, and was medically retired due to combat inflicted wounds. Newsom was a recipient of the Silver Star, Purple Heart, Nation Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and other honors. He was very close to his “Band of Brothers,” his LRRP Ranger Team of Company F of the 75th Ranger Regiment. Newsom was an avid outdoors man and enjoyed fishing.

Newsom is survived by a wife of 30 years, Brenda Lewis Newsom of the home, one sister, Patricia “Pat” N. (Richard) Murphy of Chapin, father-in-law, Billy A. Lewis of Chesterfield, two brothers-in-law, Ricky D. (Brenda) Lewis of Kershaw, and Billy Lewis Jr. of Asheville, N.C., three sisters-in-law, Sandra Sanchez of Pageland, Rebecca L. (Dr. Salim) Ghorra and Lisa O’Neal both of Cheraw, also a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
