Chesterfield County School Board members will have to take a closer look at policies regarding a teacher’s right to post personal messages or ideas on Facebook, as concerned citizen Buree Nivens said he will “continue to press the issue until it is resolved.”
The specific issue at hand, said Nivens, is whether or not a Chesterfield County teacher is allowed to send his or her political views across the public media forums such as Facebook. Although Nivens did not name the teacher in question, he produced copies of the posts he claims blasted President Obama with racial slurs just after his re-election Nov. 6.
Nivens spoke on behalf of a small group of parents at the school board’s meeting earlier this month. Because his comments were made during the Public Forum, board members were not allowed, by policy, to respond immediately. Chesterfield County School Board Chairman James Sweeney said the board would look into the matter and respond personally to Nivens.
