A routine inspection caused South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) workers to close the bridge at the end of State Road, where it ends at Highway 52 N, overnight.

According to SCDOT spokesman Kent H. Wagner, the road was closed at 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, “due to unsafe conditions.” Detours have been routed through the adjacent bridge that leads into Huckleberry Park.

“It was discovered yesterday,” Wagner said. “There is a deficiency in the steel beams that hold up the deck of the bridge.”

“It’s very early in the game, so we have limited information at the moment,” said Wagner. “The state bridge engineer is scheduled to come up here and take a look in the next couple of weeks. We will be exploring options, to determine where to repair or replace.”

It is too early as well, said Wagner, to predict how long the bridge will remain closed.
