The Bennettsville Police Department recently awarded $200 scholarships to four Northeastern Technical College students who are enrolled in the criminal justice program.
Noting the role NETC played in putting him on the pathway to a career in law enforcement, Bennettsville Police Chief Larry McNeil presented the scholarship money to the students and encouraged them to pursue their education to the fullest. McNeil earned an Associate in Arts degree from NETC in 1993 and went on to earn his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
Receiving scholarships were Janecia Garner of Bennettsville, Hillary Evers of McColl, Gustave Victor of Bennettsville and James Allison Jr. of Bennettsville. All four students are enrolled in NETC’s Associate of Criminal Justice degree program.
“Northeastern Technical College appreciates the Bennettsville Police Department scholarship fund that will help these students attain their career goals in law enforcement,” Ron Bartley, NETC president, said. “We applaud alumni like Chief Larry McNeil, who values the education he received at NETC and supports initiatives to give back to the college and its students.”
McNeil said the scholarship fund, along with a summer basketball league sponsored by the Bennettsville Police Department and community partners, was created a year ago. This is the first year the scholarships have been awarded to NETC students, but McNeil said the police department intends to make this an annual event. He also gave credit to Adrian Graham, a former Bennettsville police officer who has now joined the National Guard, for assisting in the creation of the scholarship and basketball league.
