Cheraw Mayor Andy Ingram said there “is good news on the horizon” for reopening the bridge at the end of State Road. January’s routine inspection by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) revealed deteriorating structure problems and the bridge was closed immediately.
The closing of the bridge has routed traffic through the quiet neighborhood of Huckleberry Park and many of the residents, including Ingram, are not happy about it. Although Cheraw Police Chief Jay Brooks has placed the radar machine at the bottom of the hill, and is “aggressively pursuing speeders,” residents continue to worry about the amount of traffic that streams past the children’s park there, said Ingram.
“I have been communicating with John McCarter, Chief Highway Engineer for SCDOT District 4,” said Ingram. “As a result, funds have been identified to replace the State Road Bridge pending the Highway Commission’s approval at the February meeting.”
According to Ingram, “it will be recommended this work be done in-house (SCDOT doing the work) starting in April and completion projected in July.”
The true time-line, said McCarter, “depends on SCDOT getting the necessary permits from the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and the South Carolina Wildlife Department.
