Football concussions are headline news nowadays as high profile athletes come forward with stories of health problems believed to be related to the head injuries.
A discussion about football concussions will headline a college athletic training conference hosted by the University of South Carolina on Friday, Feb. 15.
The discussion will be led by Clint Haggard, head athletic trainer for the Gamecocks football team, and Jeffie Trammel, assistant athletic trainer for Clemson football.
The conference is hosted by the USC Athletic Training Education Program, and sponsored by the South Carolina Athletic Trainers Association. The conference brings together athletic training students, faculty and staff from Charleston Southern University, College of Charleston, Erskine College, Lander University, Limestone College and Winthrop University.
The conference, held from 1 to 5 p.m. at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, will feature nearly a dozen seminars on athletic training topics, such as identifying and treating ACL injuries, hydro-therapy rehabilitation and the effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) on thermoregulation.
Following the workshops at 5 p.m., there will be an athletic training quiz bowl challenging the schools on their overall knowledge about athletic training profession. The winning institution will represent the state at the Mid-Atlantic Athletic Trainers’ Association district competition in Greenville later this spring.
