Cheraw to host Eastern District Basketball Tournament

The Cheraw Recreation and Leisure Services Department will be hosting quite a few youth basketball games this week, as eight teams will come to town for the Eastern District 12 & Under Basketball Tournament Saturday, March 2, at the Cheraw Community Center.

The full bracket will consist of 21 teams, but 13 sub-district games will narrow the field down to eight teams for the weekend. The games will start at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the championship tilt scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The Cheraw squad will host a play-in game Thursday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. against Marlboro County, with the winner moving on to Saturday’s bracket play.

The 10 a.m. game will feature the Georgetown-Florence City number two winner against the Darlington-Florence number one winner, while the Pepper Geddings-Mullins winner will battle the Lamar-Sumter winner at 11:15 a.m. The 12:30 p.m. game will feature the Cheraw-Marlboro County winner against the Andrews-Marion survivor, while the North Myrtle Beach-Dillon winner will challenge the Hartsville-Lee County survivor in the last of the quarterfinal games at 1:45 p.m. The two semifinal games will be played at 3 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., with the championship game slated for 6:30 p.m. The winner of this event will advance to the State Tournament Sat., March 9, in Liberty.

Members of the host Cheraw team are Quan Pittman, Jacob Goddard, Mhalik Sharpe, Nazir Malloy, Tramauri Johnson, Rashad McIver, Bradley Holliman, Dyjon Harrington, Dorrell McFarlin, and Xavier Dixon. Garrett White and Jay Bennett are the coaches for this all-star squad.

Admission will be charged for these youth basketball games. The cost will be $3 for adults and $2 for students. Children under the age of 6 will be admitted free. All of these games will be played at the Cheraw Community Center, which is located at 200 Powe St.

The Cheraw 10 & Under all-star team will also begin their tournament action with a home game Thursday, Feb. 28, against Dillon at 6:30 p.m.. The winner of the Cheraw-Dillon game will advance to play in Dillon on Saturday, March 2, against the Mullins-Latta winner in the Eastern District Tournament.

The members of that all-star squad are Jalen Coit, Marshall Myers, Jonathan Gordan, Anthony Waymyers, Dontrell Ratliff, Keilan Watson, Xavier McIver, Andre Brown, Jay Toney, Hunter Polson, Joshua Hubbard, and Ashanti Marshall. Whiley White, Reggie Coit, and Carlos Bowen are the coaches for this unit.
