Anthony Darnell Liddell, 19, of Bennettsville, a student at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C., was shot and killed in a parking lot Tuesday night, according to police.
He was a sophomore.
Coastal Carolina University (CCU), on its website, has confirmed that Liddell died as a result of a shooting incident at University Place residence hall. Authorities are still searching for the gunman, who witnesses say drove away from the scene.
According to CCU, Liddell was transported to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center and CCU Alert messages were sent out to students, faculty and staff. The school’s website was updated immediately to provide information about the shooting as it became available.
Although the campus was placed on lock-down Tuesday night, CCU Department of Public Safety Police Chief David Roper said there was no apparent threat to other students, faculty or staff and classes were being held as scheduled Wednesday.
The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported University Place resident Kaitlin Eriksen heard four or five shots from inside her apartment and when she went to the balcony to see what was happening she saw “a man fall against the back of a car’s rear window.”
S.C. Law Enforcement Division is conducting the investigation, assisted by CCU Public Safety. Anyone who has information regarding this incident is asked to contact CCU Dept. of Public Safety at 843-349-2177.
CCU Counseling Services professionals and ministers will be on hand at the college this week to assist with grieving students.
