Two Chesterfield schools were placed on lock-down Wednesday afternoon, and officers were waiting when a North Carolina woman, who had threaten to kill her ex-husband, his girlfriend, and herself, pulled into the parking lot of Edwards Elementary School, police said.
According to Chesterfield Police Chief Eric Hewitt, Lt. David Lisenby spotted the suspect’s vehicle when it turned in to the school lot.
Within minutes, and without further incident, said Hewitt, Rebecca Tucker Burr, 42, of 1096 Capel Dairy Road, Wadesboro, N.C., was arrested for communicating threats, possession of a firearm on school property, driving under the influence, simple possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and open container.
“We were told by North Carolina authorities,” Hewitt said, that Burr “made statements that she was going to kill her estranged husband, his girlfriend and then kill herself.” They asked Chesterfield County officers be on the lookout for a 2009 Chevy Malibu, black in color, with North Carolina tags, Hewitt said. They also warned that Burr was likely “en-route to two area schools to pick up her children.”
“At that time,” Hewitt said, “we had no idea of which two schools she was enroute to.”
” I dispatched officers to area schools and placed the schools on lock down, because our main concern was the safety of the children at these schools,” said Hewitt.
Chesterfield County Superintendent Harrison Goodwin said, “The safety plans in place by local law enforcement and the school district worked very well. The local police and the sheriff’s department came to Edwards Elementary School and Chesterfield-Ruby Middle School and helped school administration place the schools in lock-down. The suspect was taken into custody at the drive entrance of Edwards Elementary. She did have weapons, ammunition, and drugs in the car.”
Burr remains in custody at the Chesterfield County Detention Center, Hewitt said Thursday. The incident is still under investigation.
