Students at Palmetto Learning Center (PLC) learned about all things dance May 13, when the Wanda Project brought its company of dancers to school. Pianist/composer Wendell Werner offered a rousing musical presentation before accompanying dancers Sarah Henderson, Stacie Fields, Mariya Colwell-La Fleur, Devin Jennings, David Foster, and Hannah Beard in stirring performances of modern dance. The company was formed to reach out to the community and support the arts in dance. “We go anywhere and everywhere to introduce people to the dance. We want to encourage them to pursue a life in the arts,” said Wanda Project Artistic Director Wanda K.W. Ebright. Saying dance comes in many forms, the company likes to mix it up and keep it fresh for audiences, she said. The company was presented as part of the Fourth Circuit Solicitor’s Youth Arts program, now in its third year at PLC. Solicitor William B. Rogers, Jr. expanded the program to Marlboro County and the Infinity School in the spring of 2009, with hopes of expanding it to all counties of the Fourth Circuit in the future. “Many of the students here have never experienced this type of performance before,” said Palmetto language arts teach Pam Adams. “And many never will again.” The Wanda Project is based in Columbia, S.C. and rehearses at Coker College, where many of its members are alumni.
