CHERAW – A local woman has been charged with allegedly forging two checks that were returned because of insufficient funds, according to Cheraw Police Department.

Thomasina Gordon, 1307 1/2 W. Market St., was taken into custody last week after authorities learned that she had presented Cheraw business owner, Johnny Hickey, with two checks totaling $800.

Detective Rodney Elvis said that Hickey alerted police about the incident immediately.

“It is sad but we get this type of thing a lot. Who knows why people do these things. It is sort of the same thing as robbing a person with a gun, except the ones who forges checks are using a pen instead. Either way, I feel it’s a form of robbery. The law is the law and people should abide by it,” said Hickey.

“She was staying at the house of a friend and stole the checks. Both of the checks were written on the bank account of Billy R. Ingram. Mr. Ingram advised police that he did not write the checks and did not authorize the transactions,” said Elvis.

The case is still under investigation as of Monday. Gordon is scheduled to appear in March before a judge during general sessions at the Chesterfield County Courthouse.
