CHERAW – The summer heat didn’t stop four local aspiring young golf students who wanted to learn what it is like to hit the greens at Moree’s Cheraw Country Club during junior camp this past week.

Caleb Eubanks, Preston Beard, Hunter Moree and George Coker Furr, all ranging from ages 5-10 years, participated in one of several junior golf camps provided at the club under the instruction of Charles Chapman, PGA. The small group was taught how to focus on the proper techniques of golfing. Following the final lesson of the week, each youth later received a new golf trophy, which they earned for participating and doing the job right while having fun.

“These boys have been a great challenge and a pleasure to teach. I admire them and am proud of how they have come out here everyday ready to learn, in spite of the humid weather,” said Chapman.

Chapman is a Class A Certified instructor and is a graduate of Coastal Carolina University. Since 2006, Chapman has embraced numerous challenges while teaching both youth and adult golf classes at the club, which is located on the Old Cash Road and Highway 52 between Cheraw and Society Hill.

“Golf classes for both women and men are also available at the club. There is a limit of eight juniors per camp for the kids and rates vary. I will hold another camp through the week of July 12-15 and July 19-22, providing enough people sign up,” said Chapman. He also highlighted on the numerous improvements the new owner, Henry Moree, has made to the club since he purchased the property in 2009.

“I am excited about David, our golf pro here. He enjoys teaching the classes and the children especially enjoy coming to learn about golf. They love to receive their trophies,” said Moree.

Moree, the former Society Hill mayor and president/CEO of Moree Enterprises, PPM Corp. in Society Hill, said that he is in the process of implementing a new Putt-Putt golf course along with several other new additions.

“I want to make this the best golf course and country club for the community and for our new and present club members. Our goal is to keep it the quality club it was in the 1950’s. I remember when I was a child in that era and I did not want the club to change into a commercial property. It was a place where you could come and relax and enjoy yourself. I want it be like that today and in the future. We have already done extensive improvements on the swimming pool, which I hope to open very soon,” said Moree.

“Along with the new extensive improvements that include a new sauna, fitness room, bathhouse and a new large gazebo in the pool area, the swimming pool has had a total makeover, showcasing Moree’s Cheraw Country Club insignia inside.”

Aside from all of the newest and previous amenities, Moree is also implementing and combining some of the various types of memberships that the club offers. Members can use the facilities on a daily basis and use his or her membership to their benefit. According to Moree, single and family memberships are available.

“We are family oriented and our members not only have access to the golf course, but also can utilize some of the benefits of Moree’s Sportsman Preserve, which includes hunting and fishing and a lot more. We have memberships for both in-town and out-of-town residents, which I feel are competitive with other clubs and reasonably affordable,” said Moree.

Since its existence in 1924, the Club has undergone changes over the years, but Moree said that he wants to bring the club back to being a world-class country club.

Moree also highlighted on the Club’s unique golf course, which provides amateur golfers and professionals an opportunity to enjoy a round of golf on a Donald Ross design.
