The hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing and their eyes have closed.
Matters of the heart
In God’s Word, when Jesus Christ used parables to illustrate how people receive and responded to His teachings, (Matt. 13:1-9), His disciples asked, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” (v.10).
He replied by quoting the prophet Isaiah: For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes have closed, lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, so that I should heal them” (v. 15: Isaiah 6:1).
Let us imagine how God breathed his breath into Adam and made man a living soul. What a picture and extraordinary moment that must have been for Adam in the Garden of Eden. Can you imagine God standing in front of you and breathing His “Holy” breath into your body, which He created? Today, God still stands in front of us and He still breathes life into our bodies and hearts, both physically and spiritually. However, often times we don’t even pay attention to Him. As Christians, if we proclaim to be a child of God, then our hearts and our faith will show us how to walk-the-walk and talk-the-talk for Christ. If we disconnect our lifeline to Heaven by not communicating with God through prayer, obedience and submission, then we are living quite dangerously. Our heart becomes hardened and we cannot seek God first because selfishness and self-centeredness sets in. It is then that our lives become “hollow” or empty. When our hearts are tuned in to Christ, then we will want to show compassion, tenderness, caring, and love to others through our actions. Our life is an open book and I believe people who do not know the Lord, watch how we live as Christians. We can live for God or live for Satan. However, we cannot serve two masters. God does not force His love on us because it is automatic. Finding happiness is buried deep within our hearts and will come to light for others to see only if God dwells inside. How is your heart with God? No one can personally answer that question except you, the reader.
