William Leverne Joplin, 71, died Saturday, July 7, 2012, at his home.

A funeral service was held at 4 p.m. Monday, July 9, at Miller-Rivers-Caulder Funeral Home Chapel in Chesterfield. Interment followed in the Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery in Ruby.

Visitation was held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 8, at the funeral home.

Mr. Joplin was born June 21, 1941, in Mt. Croghan, a son of the late Johnnie Daniel and Mary Wilkerson Joplin. He was a retired employee of Estes Express Lines with 27 years of service, and a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church, where he served as a former choir member and former deacon. Mr. Joplin was a life member of Ruby Masonic Lodge # 314.

He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, and his grandchildren were his heart. He loved his step daughters and son-in-laws. He had a special place in his heart for his dogs, Bo Bo, Austin, and Brownie, and also his cats. He had a great love for God and man, and if anyone ever had a need, Leverne was willing to help. He enjoyed going to the beach and mountains several times a year with his wife Jean. He was a friend to all, and will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, Leverne was preceded in death by his first wife, Myra Lee “Susie” Brock Joplin; two brothers, Lathaniel Wilkerson and James Olin Wilkerson; and by one grandson, Johnathan Spencer Joplin.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Jean Jenkins Burr Joplin of the home; a son, William Scott (Gail) Joplin of Cheraw; two step daughters, Susie B. (Chris) McAllister of Chesterfield and Shannon B. (Ramark) Chavis of Cheraw; five grandchildren, Zach Chavis, Cody McAllister, Wyatt McAllister, Shannon Rivers, and Ashley Rivers.
