Dries Mertens was in Napoli on Wednesday. A visit that filled Neapolitans with nostalgia for the past.
When he joined from PSV Eindhoven in 2013, Dries Mertens had no idea he would return after more than a decade as Napoli's all-time top goalscorer.
The Red Devil's 148 goals in a Napoli shirt made him a true legend. And the love is mutual: Mertens has never hidden the fact that he feels at home at the foot of Vesuvius.
And with him it was not just empty words: he set aside today as a day to meet the people of Naples close to his heart and the places he visited not so long ago.
Accompanied by his son Ciro, he was seen on the beach, but also at the Napoli training center to bid farewell to his former teammates.
Dries Mertens is also winning the hearts of Galatasaray fans, but it will be difficult to rebuild the relationship with an entire city as he did with Napoli.
