Republican Vice President JD Vance also pointed to Vice President Kamala Harris during a visit to the border region in the state of Arizona. “The root cause of illegal immigration is Kamala Harris’ refusal to do her job,” Vance said. “It’s hard to believe how bad the policies of the Kamala Harris administration are until you see them with your own eyes.”
Donald Trump and Vance often referred to Harris as a failed “border czar,” a term used for a person tasked with securing the border. However, various media outlets indicated that Harris was not offered the job.
The vice president was tasked in 2021 with reducing diplomatic migration from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. In addition, Harris sought to examine the root causes of migration from Latin America, such as corrupt policies or poverty. So the Republicans’ claim is false.
The fact that migration figures are now declining may be in Harris’ favor. One of the main points of criticism from Republicans is the vice president’s border policy. The New York Times calls immigration “the vice president’s thorniest issue.” If the numbers stagnate or continue to decline, Harris’ campaign team will also be better able to counter the criticism.
