Tech company Waymo wants to introduce self-driving taxis on a large scale in the US city of San Francisco. This was announced on Tuesday (local time) by Waymo, which, like internet giant Google, is part of the Alphabet group.
People can drive a Jaguar I-Pace electric self-driving car around San Francisco for free when they sign up for Waymo’s Trusted Tester program through an app. Users must then sign a nondisclosure agreement and provide feedback to the Company. Although the taxis operate completely autonomously, there will be a driver to take over the driving in the event of an emergency.
The pilot project in San Francisco is an important milestone for Waymo. So far, the company has only tested self-driving taxis in a Phoenix suburb, where drivers are driven without an emergency driver. But in that desert city, weather, traffic, and infrastructure are more conducive to self-driving cars than in the more chaotic city of San Francisco.
