Mouscron is allowed to reduce the population of the local asylum centre. The Council of State decided this in a ruling. The municipality will remain in dialogue with the Federal Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (Fedasil) in the search for a solution.
The mayor of Mouscron decided in the middle of last month to reduce the capacity of the asylum center after a number of violent incidents. Currently, about eight hundred people live in Le Refuge. Mayor Brigitte Aubert (CDH) wants to reduce this number, although it does not give a concrete goal.
Vidasil appealed this decision to the Council of State, demanding an urgent suspension of Aubert’s decision. Mouscron’s local authorities said in a press release on Saturday that the council did not agree.
Vidasil and the municipality of Mouscron have now said they want to study the Council of State’s ruling before commenting on it. Obert stresses that she wants to enter into a dialogue with Vidasil in search of a solution, although “the safety of everyone, residents, staff and local residents remains the number one priority”.
This news is another blow to Vadsil, who is eagerly looking for additional reception places for asylum seekers. Their search for 5,400 additional buffer spots to deal with the existing crowds was already difficult. By decision of the State Council, Fedasil now faces the risk of losing places back into its “natural energy”.
