Michael Flynn, a former security adviser to former President Donald Trump, has filed a lawsuit against the congressional committee investigating the January 6 storming of the US Capitol. In this way he hopes to prevent the commission from accessing his phone data.
Flynn argues that the subpoena previously issued against him is too broad, targeting him for constitutionally protected statements he made as a private individual. The House of Representatives Committee of Inquiry summoned him and other Trump supporters in November for information about a “command center” from which they were trying to challenge the election results. Trump continues to falsely assert that he lost the presidential election to Joe Biden due to widespread election fraud.
Other Trump supporters summoned by the committee also went to court to avoid being heard. Alex Jones, the conspiracy theorist and founder of the right-wing Infowars website, filed a similar case on Monday.
Flynn had previously pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about communications with the former Russian ambassador. He was indicted at the time in an investigation by US Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russian influence on Trump’s 2016 election. Trump pardoned Flynn just before he resigned.
