Already discontinued CREG study: ‘Two large gas-fired power plants needed if nuclear power is completely phased out’

In a study, which has since been discontinued, power regulator CREG concluded, based on figures from grid operator Ilya, that one or two large gas-fired power plants would be needed in the event of a complete phase-out of nuclear power. Otherwise, we will have trouble in the winter of 2026. CREG accuses Ilya of using incorrect calculations and fears over-support.

The study was online only for a short time. It will be an incomplete working document. But in the meantime, N-VA MP Bert Wollants had already brought it up. His disappearance again so quickly raises questions. “Last week I asked the CREG chief why, but he hasn’t found time to answer yet,” Walantis wrote in a tweet.

What is certain is that the document is a grindstone for opponents of a full nuclear exit. They see further evidence that closing all nuclear power plants is a big mistake.

Correspondence with Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten (Green) Cabinet shows that CREG believes Elia is ordering too much from gas-fired power plants. This would only lead to a very large production capacity and therefore very expensive. CREG declines to endorse this conclusion. Van der Straeten now has to mediate between the two powers. (wwi, agy)
