US police are searching for a gunman who shot five – possibly six – homeless people in New York and Washington, DC in recent days. They all slept on the street. Two of them did not survive.
And the police of the two cities announced the news together yesterday. The latest victim was found in Manhattan at 6:30 p.m. local time last night. This happened at the same time as a vigil for other victims who had already fallen in New York.
A joint investigation was launched for similarities in the perpetrator’s modus operandi and circumstances, as well as similarities between victims and evidence. The New York Police Department is still investigating whether the sixth shooting was linked to the same suspect.
night
The first three shootings took place in Washington, DC. One victim was shot on March 3, and another last Tuesday, March 8, both in the middle of the night. Both survived. The third victim was less fortunate. He was found dead in his tent on Wednesday after emergency services were called to start a fire several streets away from the scene of the first shooting.
The gunman allegedly struck again before dawn on Saturday, this time in Manhattan. Police received a phone call at 4.30 am and found a 38-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the arm. He was asleep when he was injured. According to the police, the assailant ran away when the victim screamed: “What are you doing?” The victim was taken to the hospital but is stable.
At 6 a.m., the same perpetrator shot and killed another man 15 blocks away who was sleeping in a sleeping bag on the street. This was evident from the video images consulted by the police. The man was found shortly before 5 pm after a phone call to the police. The victim was shot in the head and neck.
Our homeless population is one of the most vulnerable groups. The one who chases them while they sleep commits a heinous crime
Photos of the suspect have also been published. There is no known motive yet. “Our homeless are among the most vulnerable. Anyone who chases them in their sleep is committing a very heinous crime,” NYPD Commissioner Kishant Sewell said.
The Washington Police Department is offering a $25,000 reward for information that could lead to a $10,000 arrest from the New York Police Department.
