Employees of an Amazon online store distribution center in New York have voted to form a union. It’s the first time for Amazon in the US that employees have voted for a union. As a result, Amazon will have to negotiate with a union about, for example, wages, time off and other working conditions.
It concerns the employees of Amazon warehouse JFK8 in the Staten Island area. 55 percent of the votes cast were in favor of creating a union called the Amazon Workers Union. Amazon has been accused of intimidating workers seeking union formation. Amazon denies this. The company said it regretted the vote.
Experts believe this opens the door to more unions at Amazon. The company has nearly one million employees in the United States, making it the second largest employer in the country. Amazon has so far managed to banish the unions.
Last year, an Alabama distribution center also voted to form a union. At the time, not enough votes were counted for the union, but the voting organizers said Amazon did not follow the rules. Counting of votes for a new ballot in Alabama is still pending.
