Google has announced that it will invest $9.5 billion (about 8.8 billion euros) in offices and data centers during the year to bring employees back to their desks.
The US company, which is part of Alphabet, will spend the money at universities across the country. “In addition, about 12,000 jobs will be created,” CEO Sundar Pichai said in a statement.
Tech companies are struggling to get employees back to the office without causing disruption among employees. Especially due to the high demand for workers in the IT sector. In March of this year, Google required its employees in the San Francisco Bay Area to work in their offices three days a week starting this month. This led to frustration, especially among employees who live outside this expensive area.
“It might seem counterintuitive to pump more money into brick-and-mortar offices, especially as we become more flexible in the way we operate,” Pichai said. “However, we believe it is more important than ever to invest in our university campus. This will lead to better products, a higher quality of life for our employees, and stronger communities.”
Apple employees also recently opposed the company’s attempt to allow employees to return to the office. In the long run, Apple employees are expected to be in the office three times a week.
