The Dutch players suffered a heavy defeat against Australia in the World Cup cricket match held in India. The team led by national coach Ryan Cook lost in Delhi by 309 runs against the world number 4.
Despite previous World Cup defeats to Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka, the Netherlands came from behind to beat the mighty South Africa. A second surprise is unlikely against Australia anytime soon. Five-time world champions Netherlands reached 399 for 8 in 50 overs (300 balls) after which the Netherlands were stranded for a total of 90 runs.
The Dutch quickly dismissed opening batsman Mitchell Marsh, but David Warner (104 runs), Steven Smith (71 runs) and Marnes Labuschagne (62 runs) quickly added to the scoring. Glenn Maxwell scored 106 off 44 balls. Logan Van Beek took four Australians, Pas de Leete took 2 wickets and Aryan Thatt took one wicket.
Vikramjit Singh gave the Netherlands a reasonable start to 400, but after he got out for 25, things went quickly. After Singh, Teja Nidamanuru top-scored for the Dutch side with 14 runs. With a total of 90 runs, the last Dutch batsman had to retire.
Ten nations participate in the World Cup, all of which play each other once. The top four will qualify for the semi-finals in mid-November. Netherlands face Bangladesh on Saturday.
