Aitana Bonmatí has won the Ballon d’Or Féminin award. The 25-year-old Barcelona midfielder has won everything there is to win this year and is Alexia Butellas’ successor in the honours. Australia’s Sam Kerr finished second ahead of Spain’s Salma Baralullo.
Bonmati won with Barcelona in the Women’s Champions League at the start of June after missing a comeback against VfL Wolfsburg. The technician was also crowned Spanish champion with the Catalan formation. During the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Bonmetti was one of Spain’s absolute best in the 1-0 win over England in the final.
Butellas has won the Ballon d’Or Féminin award for the past two years. The Barcelona figurehead did not make the shortlist this time as he rarely played due to injuries. Butellas was part of Spain’s World Cup squad.
Performance from August 1, 2022 to July 31, 2023 counted in elections. Jill Roord and Daphne Van Domselaar were among the thirty nominees, but tied for last. Together with the Dutch they reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup, in which Spain was too strong.
