Steven Defour is no longer coach of KV Mechelen. After the miserable series in the competition and the painful elimination from the cup against the Knok fans, the two sides have reached their end.
KV Mechelen was Steven Defour’s first job as head coach. He took over the duties from Dutchman Danny Buijs about a year ago.
While Defor’s performances were excellent in his first season – the cup final being the highlight – things have become more difficult in recent months.
KV Mechelen have not won the competition since September 2 and the familiar trophy was unable to provide a boost. Amateur club Knokke were the better after the penalty shootout.
Michelin and Devore slept on it after the elimination, but ultimately came to the same conclusion: things could no longer continue like this.
Steven’s attitude shows a lot of respect for the club.
“We talked for a long time and looked for the best possible way to put an end to bad sports results,” Micklin wrote on his website.
“The coach and the club have decided that it is best to part ways. Everyone has put the club’s interests first, especially Steven. His behavior shows a lot of respect for KV Mechelen.”
The search for a new coach has now begun. Assistant Fred Vanderbest will take over for DeVore for the time being, starting Sunday at Standard.
