In a world where stress and sleep problems are everywhere, nature offers a soothing solution. Recent research shows that 4 out of 5 Dutch people have problems sleeping, which can lead to problems with concentration, irritability and sadness. Statistics Netherlands reports that 1 in 5 Dutch people have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up early and not being able to fall back asleep. This lack of sleep has serious long-term health consequences. It is associated with dementia, heart failure, decreased fertility, obesity, cancer, depression and type 2 diabetes.

But there is hope. The healing power of nature cannot be underestimated. For this reason, AGAT Training and Forest Bathing are organizing a special experience: the forest bath in Brockpolder, Vlaardingen, on Sunday 12 November from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

This forest bath provides a deep, healing connection to nature to reduce stress and combat sleep problems. There is no literal shower. The name forest bathing is derived from the Japanese word Shinrin yoku, which means “forest bathing”.

Forest bathing, originally developed in Japan to combat work-related stress, goes beyond a simple walk in the woods. Led by an experienced forest bathing guide, participants immerse themselves in nature for two to three hours, stimulating all the senses. Recent studies show that this practice not only reduces stress levels and improves mood, but also helps overcome sleep problems.

A Japanese study showed that people who spend time in nature produce more melatonin – the hormone that tells our bodies when it’s time to sleep. Natural light, unlike artificial light, regulates our internal clock and helps maintain healthy sleep patterns. Especially in winter, when exposure to natural light is reduced, regularly spending time outdoors can make a big difference to sleep patterns and overall well-being.
