The number of minors receiving the Personal Assistance Budget (PAB) in Flanders rose last year to 1,816. In 2018, there were still 879 people. The number has doubled in four years. This is evidenced by the figures published by Flemish Welfare Minister Hilda Krevits. This year also, the CD&V Minister expects another increase and more than 600 minors will be budgeted for.
Minister Krivitz points to the impact of the health care investment plan and additional investments. Next year, 2.5 billion euros will be allocated to people with disabilities, an increase of 40 percent compared to 1.8 billion euros at the beginning of the legislative session in 2019. “These are historic increases in the budget, but of course the most important thing is what we do with it,” he said. The Minister notes, among other things, the abolition of the waiting list for people with disabilities who are in dire need of care.
The CD&V Minister admits that the needs are growing, but points out that more and more people with disabilities are also receiving the budget. This increase is certainly striking among minors. In 2022, 1,816 minors received the Personal Assistance Budget (PAB), a budget through which parents can purchase necessary care and support for their children. In 2018, there were still 879. Since then, the number of minors entitled to the budget has doubled.
Minister Krivitz estimates that more than 600 children or young people will be offered PAB in 2023, the largest increase ever. Last year there were 447 awards.
